Preface
The city Rizhao gets its name according to the old saying “it is the first to get the sunshine”. It is located in central part of China's coastline, and facing Japan, Korea across the Yellow sea. Covering a land area of 5310 square kilometers, Rizhao has a 100-kilometer-long coastline and a population of 2,830,000.
Rizhao is a young city with a long and glorious history. There are many prehistoric cultural relics, such as Dawenkou Culture, Longshan Culture. It is one of the birth-place of ancient Chinese civilizations.
Rizhao is named one of the modern Chinese folk Painting Hometowns by the Chinese Ministry of Culture in 1988. Folk painting is a great art with national and local characteristics. The use of color absorbed the features of the wood engraving new-year pictures and embroidery, simple but beautiful. Paper-cutting and the Han Dynasty stone carving are used for reference in the form of manifestations. It pays little attention on perspective and proportion, but focuses more on meaning and emotions. Blue sky and jade sea, local characteristics, life of fishing family, all of these features constitute the distinctive artistic style of Rizhao folk painting.
These years, there are more than 200 paintings have been shown in several countries such as United States, France, Mexico, Turkey, Malaysia and others. Many won prizes in shows in China. 33 works have been collected by the national museums. The folk painting named “Charming Rizhao” is called as the modern version of Qingming Shanghe Tu (Along the River During the Qingming Festival, a famous painting in Song Dynasty, the title of several panoramic paintings). As the treasure of Rizhao city, the folk paintings have been shown on CCTV in the Charming City National Show in 2004. It has become a beautiful cultural card of Rizhao.
Rizhao has tremendous potential for development. In the new century, there is a lot to do about the culture of yesterday, the culture of today and the culture of tomorrow. The integration of economic and culture will accelerate the development of cultural and creative industries as a new economic growth point. The city will enhance the cultural "soft power" to build a special international cultural city along the coast. |
