Vattenfall Research & Development AB is a centre of competence for research and development in one of the most exciting energy groups in Northern Europe. We conduct development projects in the Nordic countries, Poland, and Germany. The company has about 180 employees with offices located in Fredericia (Denmark), Stockholm/Älvkarleby (Sweden), and Berlin (Germany). As part of an ongoing expansion and internationalisation of our operations, we now seek to further strengthen our wind power R&D group. This development is a natural reflection of the rapid growth in wind power capacity being pursued by the Vattenfall group.

We seek competent new R&D engineers with a passion for wind power, who will take part in the continued development of our R&D center in Fredericia, Denmark. The “wind power and future technology” group has a wide range of responsibilities that support development of new wind farm and ocean energy projects as well as cost-efficient operation and maintenance of our existing wind power assets, and we do large scale and partial testing.

Working tasks

We are looking for two new team members to help in expanding our activities in the areas of siting, operation, and maintenance of wind turbines. The operation and maintenance activities are aimed at streamlining procedures for existing systems as well as estimating the maintenance costs for future systems. The siting activities are aimed at characterizing site wind conditions by a combination of long-term measurements and numerical (CFD) predictions. An overarching work task consists in making process improvements based on data mining and analysis of the substantial streams of data collected from operating wind turbines, meteorological masts, and systems for structural health monitoring of turbine components.

As one of our new colleagues, you could be working with tasks such as:

Identifying and prioritizing wind turbine O&M needs based on operational data and advanced analysis methods
Evaluating component weaknesses based on failure statistics and structural health monitoring
Troubleshooting key drive-train components through field measurements and testing
System integration and control of wind farms
Load calculations based on Flex 5
Foundation solutions for future off-shore wind farms
Extracting, qualifying, organizing, and factorizing data to generate response surface models that mimic wind turbine performance
Short-term wind forecasting for better power system management
Modeling of wake effects in large wind turbine farms
Modeling of wind resources and turbines in forests and complex terrain
Based on the cutting edge nature of our R&D work, we have close collaborations with universities, research institutes, and equipment manufacturers.

Qualifications

University degree in engineering, applied mathematics, physics, meteorology, or similar
Analytical mind with an affinity for working with data, dynamic systems, statistics and numerical methods
Practical knowledge of wind power engineering is a plus
Good communication skills. Articulate in English speech and writing. It is an advantage if you also understand Danish, German, or Swedish.
You are a creative and outgoing person, attentive to details, but capable of comprehensive thinking. You are a responsible person, who works well both independently and in a team setting. You possess good interpersonal skills and feel comfortable in a busy, international environment. You like to work across big organizations, and understand how to communicate to different audiences.
