Contemporary Chinese System
- An explanation to the Rise of China By Professor Pan Wei /Director of Center for Chinese and Global Affairs, Peking University
What explains China's stunning economic record and continued polit-ical stability decades after most of the other Communist systems in the world collapsed? Does the Chinese case set a challenge for certain social science assumptions on the relationship between economic and political change? Is the People's Republic of China simply an ex-ample of "delayed democracy"? Or is China on a trajectory that defies standard Western predictions on the connection between markets, civil society and democratization? If the Chinese case does indeed depart significantly from standard models of transition and trans-formation, what insights can we gain from its experience? We are honored having Professor Pan to give us a lecture on his own research area on Contemporary Chinese System. He will analyze China's social, political, and economic system as a theoretical frame-work and give a systematic explanation of what China is about. Mr. Pan is a Professor at Peking University in China, and got his Ph.D in Political Science from University of California, Berkeley, USA. He is specialized in Comparative politics, Chinese politics, world politics, and methodology in social sciences. Mr. Pan is also the author of Chi-na Model, a book on how the superpower China will likely behave in foreign policy and domestic politics and what that means for the world.
