PM shakes up government in response to criticism

Nearly all government ministries were affected by the Prime Minister’s cabinet reshuffling today, yet so far he has chosen not to comment on the move

It was a busy day yesterday for Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who engineered a major shakeup in the governmental ministries.

A reshuffling had long been rumoured, and today’s was the biggest since the Liberal-Conservative government took power in 2001. The shakeup comes on the heels of a sharp drop in Rasmussen’s popularity in recent months and heavy criticism in the media for his overall performance as Prime Minister.

Rasmussen had been scheduled to make a statement about the reshuffling through this morning’s press release, but the document contained nothing but the bare facts of the shakeup. In addition, the press release indicated that the PM would not be holding his regularly scheduled press conference for today.

The reshuffling began with Defense Minister Søren Gade announcing he was leaving politics, following a period where his wife had passed away and his ministry had been dogged by allegations of military leaks.
Gade is being replaced by Liberal politician Gitte Lillelund Bech, who had been chairman of the Foreign Policy Committee.

Foreign Minister Per Stig Møller – who like Gade also suffered a devastating loss when his son died last month – will take a less demanding post and become the new Culture Minister.

Carina Christensen, who had been the Culture Minister, will reportedly not get a new minister post. Conservative Party leader Lene Espersen will take over from Møller as the new foreign minister.

Brian Mikkelsen, who is currently the Justice Minister, will move into Espersen’s former post as Business and Economy Minister, while Transport Minister Lars Barfoed becomes Mikkelsen’s successor as Justice Minister.

Hans Christian Schmidt, who had been the Liberal Party’s group chairman, is set to become the new Transport Minister. Schmidt returns to a government post after being a victim of the 2007 reshuffling. He was made Environment Minister under the initial Anders Fogh Rasmussen government and then moved over to head the Food and Agriculture Ministry in 2004.

Karen Ellemann, who took her first ministry post just last April, leaves the Social and Interior Ministry and will succeed Troels Lund Poulsen as Environment Minister. Poulsen moves over to become Tax Minister.

Liberal MP Søren Pind is a new face in the government, leaving behind his membership on Copenhagen’s city council and becoming the new Development Cooperation Minister.

Education Minister Bertel Haarder will take over the newly integrated Interior and Health Ministry. Liberal MP Tina Nedergaard will be Haarder's successor.

Development Cooperation Minister Ulla Tørnæs, Food and Agricultural Minister Eva Kjer Hansen, Tax Minister Kristian Jensen, Science Minister Helge Sander and Health Minister Jakob Axel Nielsen leave their respective ministries and will not receive new posts. Jensen will, however, be the Liberal Party’s new parliamentary group leader.

Conservative MP Benedikte Kiaer was named as the new Social Affairs Minister, while fellow party member Charlotte Sahl-Madsen leaves her position as president of Danfoss Universe to become the new Science Minister.

Climate and Energy Minister Lykke Friis and Employment Minister Inger Støjberg will reportedly stay put in their respective posts.

Finance Minister Claus Hjort Frederiksen and Integration Minister Birthe Ronn Hornbech are also being allowed to remain in their posts, although analysts and government critics will no doubt question why. Both have been under heavy fire in the media over the past year for taking numerous questionable actions related to their respective areas.

The new ministers were scheduled to be presented to Queen Margrethe at 10am today.
