At The Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Culture and Global Studies a position as assistant professor in Chinese Area Studies (fixed-term max. 4 years) is open for appointment from 1 August 2015 or soon thereafter. Employment is provided that the necessary funding will be available.
               

Job description
The primary tasks in the position are research and teaching within Chinese Area Studies, but applicants must also document broader knowledge of and be able to teach within the fields of Chinese Area Studies in association with development studies and international relations. Applicants must document a research profile at assistant professorship level within one or several fields of Chinese history, society, culture and politics, covering, for example, some of the following areas:

• Modern China's social and cultural history and development.
• Modern China's economic and political history and development.
• International relations and international political economy in combination with the contemporary rise of China and other emerging powers.

In terms of teaching the position is attached to the bachelor and master specialization programme in Chinese Area Studies and the joint master's programme in China and International relations. Although this position requires a level of professional competence in China-related teaching, it is also expected that the applicant is able to conduct general teaching in international relations, international political economy and development studies. The position may also include teaching and supervision obligations in other programmes under the School of Culture and Global Studies.

It will be considered an advantage, but not a prerequisite, that applicants have experience with problem based learning which is Aalborg University's pedagogical model. Applicants who are qualified to teach within other areas of the programmes mentioned should state this in their application.

Research and teaching (lecture and supervision) activities within Chinese Area Studies are fully conducted in English, and therefore applicants must be able to submit evidence of their English capacity at a professional level. Although Chinese language skills are not a requirement for this position, a working level of Chinese language both in reading and speaking is clearly seen as an advantage.

If the assistant professor's mother tongue is not Danish, he/she must be prepared, within a two-year period, to acquire a command of Danish which will enable him/her to conduct teaching and supervision activities in Danish and to participate in administrative and development related activities at the department, and to cooperate with other academic environments.

In terms of personal qualities, the assistant professor is expected to have strong interpersonal skills, and to be able to establish and maintain good relations with researchers and students with different cultural and political backgrounds.

Like all other researchers at the department, the new employee will be attached to one or two research groups, according to his/her own choice.

Daily attendance at the department is required. In addition, the new employee must be prepared to participate actively in all aspects of the day-to-day activities at the department and in the study programmes. Qualification requirements

Applicants for the post of assistant professor must hold a PhD degree or academic qualifications at PhD level. In the selection of candidates, emphasis will be placed on research potential and pedagogical qualifications as well as experience with supervision and lectures.

• Education (copies of documentation for degrees obtained).
• Documentation for teaching qualifications.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities (the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Salary is in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) on Academics in the State.
