What should you know about an a-kasse?

About amounts, time limits and all the fine print.

Join within 14 days

Regardless of your being employed or unemployed when completing your education it’s important that you subscribe latest 14 days after the completion of your studies. If you don’t meet this deadline, you can only be admitted as a wage earner and you will then only be entitled to benefits after minimum a year’s membership. Likewise, you will lose the opportunity to get holiday benefits as a graduate.

Pre-subscription

If you will be completing your studies within the coming six months you can pre-subscribe with CA a-kasse already now. That means that we register you in order to prepare your membership. Please note that you still have to meet the 14 days’ deadline. Thus, you have to confirm that you have graduated at the latest 14 days after your last exam. You’re not charged subscription fees until you graduate.

What’s the cost of membership?

It costs DKK 451 a month to be a member of CA a-kasse corresponding to approximately DKK 300 after tax. The fee is charged quarterly i.e. DKK 1,353 (excl. a possible contribution to the voluntary early retirement scheme).

What the benefits amount to

If you’re unemployed, you’re entitled to benefits one month after the completion of your studies. The benefits amount to DKK 668 a day. That corresponds to approximately DKK 14,473 a month.

Quitting a student job

Normally you get three week’s quarantine if you tender your resignation yourself. However, if you resign and have your last working day PRIOR to your graduating, you won’t get a quarantine.

Can I keep my student job?

Yes, you’re allowed to keep your student job but you must ensure that your employer signs a 'release certificate' in which they waive any resignation notice you may be bound by towards them. You must forward it to the a-kasse within five weeks from the day you’re entitled to benefits. We recommend, though, that you always call your a-kasse to hear more, as there may be details impacting your right to benefits.

What you should do when you have passed your last exam.

Subscribe, and if you have pre-subscribed, please send an e-mail to ca@ca.dk notifying us that you have this day completed your studies.
If you have a job: Then you must still subscribe with the a-kasse latest 14 days after having completed your studies so that you don’t lose your rights as a graduate. You are then insured if you should become unemployed and are thus secured a steady income in the shape of unemployment benefits. It’s very IMPORTANT that you meet the deadline even though you’re in a job, because if you don’t meet the deadline, then you can only be admitted as a wage earner and then you will only be entitled to unemployment benefits after minimum a year’s membership. Likewise, you will lose your rights to receiving holiday benefits as a graduate
If you’re unemployed and want to get unemployment benefits: Then you must subscribe with the a-kasse latest 14 days upon the completion of your studies so that you don’t lose your rights as a graduate. The first months after graduating you have a waiting period. That means you cannot get benefits during that period. After this you’re entitled to benefits. If for example you complete your studies on 1st June, then you incur a waiting period until 2nd July and after this date you can get benefit. You should consider the fact that unemployment benefits are paid in arrears whilst your SU (Danish Education Support) is paid in advance. That means you may incur a period of up to two months where you have nothing paid out.
One of the conditions for receiving benefits is being registered at the Job centre. The a-kasse will inform you of when you need to register in order to be entitled to .
