Four summer tips west of the Belt                                 

We know that many expats take the summer holidays as an opportunity to goback home. For those choosing to enjoy the lush Danish summer instead,here are four great tips west of the Belt.

Odense – The Brandts Art Complex
Art, Photo and Media Exhibitons with English Guided Tours
In the heart of Odense lies Brandts, a beautiful culturalinstitution which provides the perfect place for a family excursion forthose of you seeking brief refuge from the summer heat. Founded in 1987in an old industrial building complex as Denmark’s first internationalcentre of art and culture, Brandts is comprised of three separateinstitutions: Kunsthallen Brandts (The Art Hall at Brandt’s), Museetfor Fotokunst (The Museum of Photo Art) and Danmarks Mediemuseum (TheDanish Media Museum). During the summer there are a number ofexhibitions on such as the solo exhibition of internationally acclaimedOlav Christopher Jenssen, who has established himself as an originalreinterpreter of abstract painting. English guided tours of Brandts areavailable upon request, and on Thursdays between 5pm and 9pm admissionis free.

Arhus – Jazz Festival, July 10th-19th
A musical event for the whole family
Starting this Friday the annual Arhus Jazz Festival kicks off onceagain, filling the city’s musical venues and cafes with an eclectic mixof jazz genres and artists. Celebrating its 21st birthday the festivalis in top form and has reached the balance of being small, friendly andeasily accessible, while also showcasing plenty of major internationalnames. There is also plenty of Jazz for the kids. This year childrenand their grown-ups will be able to listen and dance to Children’s Jazzseven mornings in a row at 11 am at Klostertovet (Children jazzprogramme here). At the first concert – with MIBB and John Sarauw onSunday, July 12 – kids will even have the chance to play instrumentsand conduct a big band. As with all concerts at Klostertorvet,admission is free.

Aalborg – Wilhelm Freddie
Provocative surrealist Danish art
Over the summer Alborg’s art museum Kunsten will be exhibiting thelifework of one of the most important Danish artists of the 20thcentury, Wilhelm Freddie (1909- 1995). With the title, ’Stick a Fork inyour eye,’ the exhibition is full of deformed human bodies, strangeerotic situations and challenging political commentary. Wilhelm Freddieloved to shock his audience, and whilst his work might not cause muchscandal in the 21st century, the pieces provoke the viewer and openone’s eyes to different realities and forms of human sexuality.

Kolding – Summer Concerts by the Lake
EveryThursday in the month of July the beautiful green lawn in front ofSlotssøbadet will be buzzing with free musical performances for allages. On the 16th the pop and rock of Kim Schwartz will certainly getthe crowd swinging and singing. Danish singer Lene Siel graces thestage on the 23rd showcasing the hits that have made her a Danish popsensation, and the last concert of the month features the old rock androll tunes of Backseat Boys.
