The Exploration & New Business Department in Copenhagen are looking for an experienced petroleum geoscientist to head the Geoscience Group within the Technical Services Department.

The Geoscience Group

The role of the Geoscience Group is to provide expert technical assistance to exploration asset or study teams world wide. The group specializes in tasks relating to basin analysis, with particularly focus on petroleum systems evaluation, sedimentology, geochemistry and structural analysis. Work undertaken is performed in very close collaboration with asset teams and members of the Geoscience Group are periodically allocated to asset teams to perform dedicated tasks.  

The Geoscience Group work with a large variety of geological, geophysical and petrophysical challenges. Close association with internal technical support groups such as Geophysics, Engineering and Data Management is therefore essential. As an integral part of the work, the Geoscience Group is also responsible for establishing and maintaining collaboration with universities, research groups and individual experts worldwide and ensures that the available external knowledge is optimally used and integrated in the work.

Members of the Geoscience Group work with many different asset teams and part of their role is to carry experience around in the organization and spread best practice. Additionally, they have – within their area of expertise – an obligation to ensure that the quality of asset team’s work is high, consistent and in line with company standards.

The Geoscience Group currently consists of 12 people. These include geologists, geophysicists, and petrophysicists technical support staff. The group is part of the Exploration Service Group, which in addition consists of the exploration Engineering Group and the global exploration Portfolio Management Group.

The Position

The Head of the Geoscience Group is the daily leader of the Geoscience Group and as such responsible for the planning, execution and technical assurance of projects involving members of the Geoscience Group. In most cases this is done jointly with project managers from asset teams and geoscience managers in other departments and an important part of the role is therefore to establish and maintain strong networks with asset team leaders locally and globally.

The Head of the Geoscience Group is expected to take an active role in technical assessments and evaluations locally as well as globally and contribute to peer reviews and Risk & Resource Committees whenever required by the ExNB Portfolio Management Group.

The Head of the Geoscience Group will be reporting directly to the Head of the Exploration Services in ExNB. In addition she/he will have close working relationships to the Chief Geologist and Chief Geophysicist particularly regarding technology and staff career development.  

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide effective geoscience and petrophysics work planning, coordination, technical oversight/assurance, technology deployment, quality measurement and approvals and help achieve stated business goals and milestones.

  • Provide leadership and foster teamwork in order to motivate staff and establish work environment, work systems and practices that maximize opportunities for staff to achieve job satisfaction and contribute effectively.

  • Promote technical knowledge sharing and development through active involvement and support of inter- and cross-departmental technical Competence Groups and communities.

  • Develop and maintain a broad international, external network to relevant research institutes and experts.

  • Close collaboration with the company’s Chief Geologist, Geophysicist and Petrophysicist regarding technology development and employment, staff career planning and performance evaluations

  • Recruitment of experienced and junior geoscience staff for the ExNB Department in Copenhagen

  • Jointly with senior management and team leads continuously work to optimize project resource distribution within ExNB in Copenhagen

Qualifications

·  A strong and enthusiastic team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and with the ability to engage and motivate others.

·  A minimum of 10 years of petroleum industry experience from an international oil company

·  Solid theoretical background in petroleum geology and/or geophysics combined with considerable practical experience in basin analysis and regional studies.

·  Broad and firm experience from a variety of depositional settings and basins.

·  Interest in innovative technology detection, development and implementation.

·  Ability to communicate fluently in both written and spoken English.
